Mapping China: Performing Arts - Dance: Selected Festivals

Guangdong Modern Dance Festival: First launched in Guangzhou in 2004. Long history of partnerships with Dutch dance companies and festivals, including JULIDANS. http://www.gdfestival.com/en/

Beijing Dance Festival (BDF): Claims to be “Biggest Open Platform of Contemporary Dance in China.” Comprises a one-week “dance camp” education week and a one-week festival of international performances.  http://www.beijingdancefestival.com/website/index.php?lang=en 

Both festivals above are organized jointly by Guangdong Modern Dance Company, BeijingDance LDTX, and Hong Kong City Contemporary Dance Company, all under the auspices of Mr. Willy Tsao.

New Dance Festival: Founded in 2015 by Beijing’s Chaoyang District Culture Center, home of Beijing 9 Dance Theatre. Invited numerous international dance companies to perform. Limited budget, relies on Embassies and foreign funding to bring over international troupes. No website. Second festival in 2016 is still unconfirmed.

Shanghai Contemporary Dance Days: Website to come in May 2016. First year of this new festival, organized by the Shanghai Dancer’s Association in collaboration with “ARTCLUB,” a membership group based in Shanghai that organizes and publicizes performing arts events. Inviting both Chinese and international modern dance groups to perform. Does not offer performance fees, only local housing and meals. More information about YAN ART Club on their WeChat account
