Mapping China: Performing Arts - Theatre: Selected Festivals

Wuzhen International Theatre Festival: In only a few years since it was established by investors dedicated to preserving the ancient river town of Wuzhen, this festival has rapidly risen to become one of the most respected in China. Boasting international luminaries such as Stan Lai and Peter Brook on their curatorial advisory board, the festival both invites world renowned theatre companies as well as commissions new works from some of China’s own rising stars. The festival is also focusing on developing arts management / producer training forums and other educational / professional development programs. http://www.wuzhenfestival.com/en/about.aspx?classId=12

Beijing Fringe Festival (known in Chinese as the Beijing Youth Theatre Festival): Hosted by the Beijing Federation of Literary and Art Circles as well as the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Culture with guest curator Meng Jinghui, this festival has been running in various forms since the early 2000s. Funded primarily by the Beijing local government and partnering with numerous venues throughout the city. Credited with launching the careers of many younger generation theatre artists born in the 1980s.
