Even after the death of Stalin, Shostakovich could not freely express himself. From 1960, his Eighth String Quartet was officially dedicated to "the victims of fascism and war", but according to his son, it was to all victims of totalitarian regimes. The quote "tormented in bondage" from Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk speaks a lot. Since Stalin forbade opera, Shostakovich explored the stage for his drama in symphonies and chamber music. Kris Defoort has been known also mainly because of his music. As part of a privacy-project Flemish-Dutch House deBuren asked him to write a work for the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. A very different aspect of the theme gets attention as the worldly-known pianist Lang Lang plays the piano concerto by Ravel, one of the most closed composers.

Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra

The 125-year-old Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra is one of the best orchestras in the world. But what makes it unique now? Critics praise time and again that its orchestral sound is highly recognizable. It's the result of long-term relationships between orchestra chief conductor and the mmagnificent hall. However, it is difficult to express sound in words. The orchestra invite you to come experience this yourselves.
